ZERO-EMISSION-REALITY - COST PRESSURE, COMPETITION, TECHNOLOGY OPENNESS

Early bird price available
Handelsblatt Annual Conference

The industry has initiated the decarbonization of road freight transport, both in the heavy and light commercial vehicle segment. The public and private charging infrastructure for these vehicles is also developing positively. Nevertheless, the fleet transformation is still associated with major challenges.

Vehicles with zero-emission drives are available and fleet operators can choose between battery-electric concepts, fuel cell solutions, hydrogen combustion engines and synthetic fuels. However, the question of costs remains crucial: the acquisition, operation and financing of the new technologies are a burden for companies. At the same time, political uncertainties, reduced subsidies and a truck-specific refueling and charging infrastructure that still lacks nationwide coverage are increasing the pressure on the industry. In addition, international competition is growing, particularly from manufacturers from China, who are pushing into the European market with attractive offers and vehicle concepts.

Against this backdrop, the role of technological openness is becoming increasingly important. It allows all fleet operators flexible solutions for different areas of use and fleet sizes. The Handelsblatt Annual Conference Commercial Vehicles 2026 discusses how the industry, transportation and logistics sectors can set up future-proof fleets under the current economic and political conditions.

Technological and social developments such as electromobility, digitalization and sustainability are setting the pace for the German automotive industry along the entire value chain.

The major manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen are not tackling the transformation of the industry alone - they are relying heavily on the support of suppliers who want to expand their market power with their own developments and products.
