Nils Janus is the Chief AI Officer at Covestro, a pioneering material science company with an annual revenue of 18 billion EUR. His role is pivotal in advancing the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and Data Science, not only technologically but also in fostering the requisite mindset and organizational shifts. His formula, „Artificial Intelligence = Machine Learning + Autonomy,“ encapsulates his approach towards granting decision autonomy to agents and systems.
With a diverse managerial background, Nils has led departments in Treasury, Power Plant Construction, and IT across Germany, the UAE, and South Korea. His consistent aim has been to transform data into financially measurable value. This ethos has flourished in his current role, where he notably enhanced the production output of chemical plants as well as reducing the total cost for group liquidity.
A significant highlight of Nils‘ tenure at Covestro was his collaboration with executives from Evonik, Bayer and other companies in the chemical industry. Together, they initiated the first data science conference in the chemical industry and established a yearly Executive Peer Exchange, fostering a culture of collaborative innovation, while ensuring adherence to all existing antitrust rules and laws.
Nils holds a master’s degree in Pure Mathematics and Computer Science from the FAU Erlangen. His multidisciplinary background and relentless pursuit of data-driven value creation position him as a thought leader in leveraging AI to drive operational excellence and company transformation in the chemical industry.
